Obverse description Mexican republican eagle displayed with wings spread, perched atop a nopal cactus rising from a rocky outcrop, facing right with a serpent clutched in its beak and talons. The device is encircled by a half-wreath composed of oak and laurel branches. The legend REPUBLICA MEXICANA runs along the upper periphery of the coin. Note: diameter varies between 19 and 23 mm depending on die used.

Obverse lettering REPUBLICA MEXICANA
Reverse description Central field bears the fractional denomination '1/8' above the inscription 'DE REAL', with the date '1842' below, all enclosed within a beaded inner circle and surrounded by a wreath of laurel. The design is characteristic of the utilitarian copper coinage issued by the State of Durango during the early republican period. A known overdate variety (1842/33) exists for this issue.
