| Obverse description | Central field depicts a crested tournament helmet rendered in a stylized Gothic manner, surmounted by a decorative ornament or crest characteristic of late medieval heraldic coinage. The helmet is shown in frontal or three-quarter view with flanking mantling elements visible on either side. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading DEDERICVS : DNS : BATE, identifying the issuer as Dirk (Theodoric), Lord of Batenburg. The overall die work is bold and deeply cut, typical of hammered Low Countries coinage of the late 14th century. |
