Henry IV's early coinage was complicated by the fact that he spent the first several years of his reign fighting to actually control the country he nominally ruled. The Catholic League held Paris until 1594, and numerous provincial mints operated under shifting loyalties — some striking in his name, others refusing to until his conversion to Catholicism in July 1593. The practical result is that 1/8 Ecu issues from this period can originate from a wide scatter of mint facilities, each with its own die quality and output regularity.
Dy#1231 encompasses a long production window across multiple mints, and mint mark attribution is essential for dating individual pieces with any precision.
