Gaston d'Orléans — younger brother of Louis XIII and perpetual thorn in Richelieu's side — governed Dombes as its sovereign prince from 1626 until his death in 1660. His coinage from this period is notably irregular, with multiple die varieties documented across denominations; the "var." designation against Dy féodales 2982 is unsurprising given the inconsistent workshop practices at Trévoux, the principality's mint. Dombes issues of this decade are among the last feudal silver coinages struck in France before royal centralization effectively ended provincial minting autonomy.
