Beschrijving voorzijde Arabic calligraphic inscription filling the central field, rendered in bold thuluth script typical of Ottoman-era Algerian coinage. The legend reads the tughra or devotional phrase associated with the Regency of Algiers. The design is enclosed within a beaded or dotted border following the irregular flan shape, characteristic of hammered silver coinage of this period. The overall style reflects the North African Ottoman provincial mint tradition, with no portraiture, relying entirely on calligraphic artistry.

Aanvullende informatie

The Regency of Algiers operated as an Ottoman tributary state with considerable de facto autonomy, and its coinage reflects that awkward duality — Ottoman sultan's name on the coin, Algerine dey controlling the mint. Selim III's reign coincided with a period of acute financial pressure on the Regency, partly driven by the costs of ongoing corsair operations and periodic tribute disputes with European powers. The 1/8 budju denomination served the smallest retail transactions in a monetary system where Spanish reales and Moroccan currency circulated alongside local issues in constant, chaotic competition.
