The Regency of Algiers operated as an Ottoman tributary state with considerable de facto autonomy, and its coinage reflects that awkward duality — Ottoman sultan's name on the coin, Algerine dey controlling the mint. Selim III's reign coincided with a period of acute financial pressure on the Regency, partly driven by the costs of ongoing corsair operations and periodic tribute disputes with European powers. The 1/8 budju denomination served the smallest retail transactions in a monetary system where Spanish reales and Moroccan currency circulated alongside local issues in constant, chaotic competition.
