Filipe II of Portugal — Philip III of Spain — never set foot in Asia, yet his name circulated on the smallest denomination copper struck at the Ceilão mint during a period when the Estado da India was hemorrhaging territory and revenue to the Dutch VOC. The bazaruco was the bottom rung of Portuguese India's monetary hierarchy, used almost exclusively in local bazaar transactions where Portuguese monetary authority was more nominal than real.
At 0.5 grams and 8 mm, surviving examples were struck on irregular flans with notoriously inconsistent dies — the Gomes F2 01 classification helps here, but condition attributions remain contentious among specialists.
