Additional information

George II ascended to the British throne in June 1727 following the sudden death of George I at Osnabrück, and this issue would have been struck in the months surrounding that transition — a moment when his dual role as King of Great Britain and Elector of Hanover demanded parallel coinage programs on both sides of the North Sea. The Calenberg-Hannover mint output of this period was directly tied to the administrative machinery of the Electorate, which George continued to govern as a personal possession entirely separate from the British Crown.

Welter 2608 is among the scarcer denominations of the type, the sixth-thaler occupying an awkward practical niche that limited its production relative to larger silver.
