Cranenburg — a small Rhine town on the German-Dutch border, known today as Kranenburg — issued this 1.50 Mark note amid the acute small-change shortage that gripped Weimar Germany in the early 1920s. The denomination itself is telling: 1.50 Mark was an awkward, non-round value that only made practical sense in a system where virtually any amount was better than no coin at all.
Gebrüder Parcus of Munich printed a large share of the better-quality Notgeld for Bavarian and Rhenish municipalities; A. Reibmayr's design credit here is comparatively rare on surviving Parcus commissions. Perforation as the sole security feature was typical of low-budget municipal issues but offered genuine deterrence against home printing.
