The bird faces the viewer frontally in a devotional, iconic style characteristic of late Baroque papal coinage. The circular Latin legend VENI٠SANCTE٠SPIRITUS runs along the upper periphery, invoking the Holy Spirit in keeping with the interregnum theme, while the lower arc bears the denomination inscription QVINTO٠DI٠SCV: indicating the one-fifth Scudo value. The milled border frames the design cleanly. |

Struck during the interregnum following the death of Clement XIV in September 1774, this issue was produced under the authority of the Papal Camera — the administrative body that governed the temporal affairs of the Holy See between pontificates. Carlo Rezzonico served as Camerlengo at the time, a nephew of the late Clement XIII, and his name appears on sede vacante coinage as the presiding official rather than as a reigning pope.
The conclave that followed lasted until February 1775, an unusually extended vacancy that produced a correspondingly broader window for Camera issues. Pius VI emerged as the successor after 134 days of deliberation.
