| Obverse description | Central field displays the papal arms of Cardinal Carlo Rezzonico, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, rendered as a quartered shield bearing an eagle in the upper sinister quarter and horizontal stripes below, surmounted by a cardinal's hat with pendant tassels on either side. Behind the shield, the crossed keys of Saint Peter are visible, and above all rises the papal umbraculum (ombrellino), the symbol of the vacant See, with radiating ribs and fringe. The circular Latin legend SEDE٠VACANTE٠MDCCLXXIV runs along the periphery, and the coin is bordered by a finely milled edge. |
