A circular Latin legend surrounds the bust, reading CHRISTIANVS VIII D:G:DANIÆ V:G:REX, identifying the king by the Grace of God as ruler of Denmark, the Goths, and the Wends. The date 1842 is divided at the base of the portrait by the Altona mint mark (globe symbol), flanked by the initials of the mint officials.
