1/5 Daalder '1/5 Philipsdaalder' - Philip II bust right

Overijssel occupied an awkward position in the Habsburg Netherlands — technically loyal to Philip II but chronically resistant to Spanish fiscal demands, which makes a coin bearing his bust something of a political performance. These fractional daalders were struck during the window between Philip's 1555 inheritance of the Low Countries and the arrival of the Duke of Alba in 1567, after which the mint's relationship with Madrid became considerably less cooperative.

The Vanhoudt 271-HS designation places this among a handful of documented die marriages for the type. Alba's subsequent monetary edicts effectively ended independent provincial coinage decisions of this kind.
