Reverse description Full-length figure of martial artist and actor Bruce Lee depicted in a dynamic high side-kick pose, bare-chested and facing left, with a coiling Chinese dragon beneath him occupying the lower left field. The design commemorates the centenary of cinema. The legend CENTENARY OF THE CINEMA arcs around the upper field, flanked by the dates 1895 and 1995. The inscriptions BRUCE LEE and 1940-1973 appear in the upper central field above the figure. The denomination 1/5 CROWN and the fineness mark 999.9 Au. are inscribed in the lower field.

Additional information

Bruce Lee died in Hong Kong in July 1973, and Gibraltar's decision to strike a commemorative in his honor more than two decades later places this coin firmly in the wave of celebrity bullion issues that flooded the market through the 1990s. The Gibraltar Government used these fractional crown series aggressively during this period, licensing entertainment and cultural figures well outside any plausible connection to the territory itself.

The .9999 fineness is notably purer than the .9167 gold standard of most sovereign-format coinage from the same era.
