Pietro Grimani served as Doge from 1741 until his death in 1752, a period when Venice was already in sharp economic contraction — the fractional zecchino existed largely to facilitate small-denomination gold transactions in Levantine trade, where Venetian coinage still commanded trust long after Venetian political power had hollowed out. The quarter zecchino was never struck in large numbers under any doge, and Grimani's reign produced some of the lowest fractional gold outputs of the late Republic.
