Authorized under King Gojong's modernization drive, this denomination was among the first machine-struck coins produced at the newly established Incheon mint — Korea's first modern mint facility, which began operations in 1892 with Japanese technical assistance. The arrangement was politically fraught: the Joseon court sought monetary modernization as a hedge against foreign economic penetration, yet relied on the very same outside powers to achieve it.
Production ceased by 1895, the year Japan imposed the Shimonoseki Treaty following the First Sino-Japanese War, effectively ending Korean monetary independence for the following decade.
