Markus Sittikus von Hohenems secured the Salzburg archbishopric in 1612 through a conclave heavily influenced by his uncle, Cardinal Altemps — a reminder that ecclesiastical appointments in the Holy Roman Empire were rarely purely spiritual decisions. His reign, though only eleven years, produced a remarkable building program including Hellbrunn Palace, funded in part through aggressive monetization of Salzburg's alpine silver resources. These quarter thalers represent some of his earliest coinage, struck across two calendar years before his minting operation stabilized into longer series.
