Beschrijving voorzijde Laureate and draped bust of Emperor Joseph I facing right, with long curling hair falling over the shoulder and ornate armored pauldron visible at the truncation. The denomination mark '1/4' appears in the lower left field. The encircling Latin legend reads IOSEPHUS D G ROM IMP S AV G H B REX, identifying the emperor by name and his titles as Holy Roman Emperor and King of Hungary and Bohemia. The portrait is rendered in the high-relief baroque style characteristic of the Hall Mint during the early eighteenth century.

Aanvullende informatie

Joseph I ruled for just six years before dying of smallpox in April 1711 at age 32, making his entire coinage output compressed into a single short reign. The Hall mint in the Tyrol — one of the oldest continuously operating mints in the Habsburg system — produced this quarter thaler during a period when the dynasty was simultaneously fighting the War of the Spanish Succession and suppressing the Rákóczi uprising in Hungary, stretching imperial finances to their limits.

Her#171 is the standard Herinek reference for this type. Die alignment and strike quality from Hall vary noticeably across Joseph's brief reign.
