Joseph I ruled for just six years before dying of smallpox in April 1711 at age 32, making his entire coinage output compressed into a single short reign. The Hall mint in the Tyrol — one of the oldest continuously operating mints in the Habsburg system — produced this quarter thaler during a period when the dynasty was simultaneously fighting the War of the Spanish Succession and suppressing the Rákóczi uprising in Hungary, stretching imperial finances to their limits.
