| Obverse description | Crowned and bearded bust of Elector August I of Saxony facing right, wearing armour with a sword visible at his left shoulder, set within a beaded inner circle. The effigy is rendered in the robust Germanic Renaissance style typical of mid-sixteenth-century Saxon coinage. The surrounding outer legend reads AVGVSTVS D G DVX SAXONIE SA ROMANI IMPERI ARCHIMARS ET ELECTOR, separated by small ornamental stops. |

| Reverse description | Central field dominated by the quartered electoral arms of Saxony — featuring the Rautenkranz (barry with a bend of rue) — enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The date 1554 is divided across the field flanking the shield. The outer legend, separated by ornamental stops, continues the titulature of the elector: LANDG THVRINGIE MARCH MISNIE ET DVX BVRGGRAVI MAGDEBVRGENSIS, completing the double-sided inscription that was standard practice for Saxon quarter thalers of this period. |
