Eppillus is one of the few Celtic rulers of pre-Roman Britain who styled himself REX on his coinage — a deliberate borrowing of Latin that signals direct engagement with Roman political culture rather than hostility to it. He had previously ruled the Atrebates to the west before appearing among the Cantii, suggesting either conquest or dynastic maneuvering in the years immediately following Caesar's expeditions. The Cantii territory in Kent was the first landfall for Roman invasion forces, making its rulers acutely aware of what Roman recognition was worth.
