Charles of Egmont spent nearly his entire reign fighting to keep Guelders out of Habsburg hands, a struggle that defined the duchy's final decades as an independent entity. These small billon pieces were struck across that long conflict — funding a duchy perpetually at war, relying on French subsidies and mercenary contracts to stay solvent. The "Peerdeke" nickname, derived from the horse motif, became the coin's popular identity among a population that handled it daily for nearly half a century.
The 46-year emission span almost certainly produced significant die variation, though no comprehensive die study has fully catalogued the series.
