Travancore operated as a princely state under British paramountcy but retained the right to strike its own coinage — a privilege jealously maintained by its rulers throughout the 19th century. Moolam Thirunal Rama Varma VI reigned from 1885 to 1924, one of the longer tenures among Travancore's monarchs, and his coinage spans several distinct series. The KM#37 quarter rupee belongs to his early issues, predating the later reforms that would standardize weights across the state's denominations.
Travancore's .949 fine silver was notably purer than contemporary British Indian coinage, which ran at .917.
