The denomination numerals '1' and '4' flank the cap to the left and right respectively, forming the fraction 1/4. Cundinamarca declared itself an independent republic in 1811 under its own constitution — notably separate from, and briefly in political rivalry with, the United Provinces of New Granada. This cuartillo was struck during that fragile window of autonomous governance, before the reconquista campaigns of Pablo Morillo swept through the region and extinguished the patriot mints. The Bogotá facility producing these pieces was improvised and inconsistently supplied, which accounts for the erratic fineness and weight variation documented across the Hernández specimens.
