Obverse description Central device depicts three volcanoes rising from a horizontal ground line, the middle volcano emitting smoke or flames, all surmounted by a radiant sun with alternating long and short rays in the upper field. The design is rendered in a bold relief style characteristic of Central American republican coinage. A fine beaded border encircles the entire coin. The date appears in the exergue below the volcanic group.

Additional information

Guatemala's fractional silver coinage of this period was produced under the monetary framework established after the country abandoned the old colonial real system — slowly and incompletely. The 1/4 real persisted well past the adoption of the peso decimal system precisely because small-denomination silver remained the only practical medium for indigenous market transactions in the highlands, where paper currency was effectively useless.
