The design is characteristic of medieval Norwegian bracteate coinage, with the letter serving as the principal device in the field.

Descrizione del rovescio	Incuse mirror image of the obverse, as is typical of bracteate construction, in which the design is struck from a single die onto thin silver sheet. This bracteate was issued during the reign of King Sverre Sigurdsson (r. 1177-1202), and the letter B is generally interpreted by numismatists as a mint mark denoting Bergen as the place of production.
