Beschrijving voorzijde A large capital letter M in bold Roman majuscule occupies the central field of this thin bracteate flan, struck in relief on one side only. The letter is rendered in a robust, slightly archaic style consistent with late 12th-century Scandinavian coinage. The central device is enclosed within a double concentric circle, forming a raised inner ring and an outer border that frames the composition. The flan itself is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, characteristic of hand-cut hammered bracteates of the period. The letter M is interpreted as an abbreviation for the mint of Marstrand.

Aanvullende informatie

Struck during the reign of Sverre Sigurdsson, a period of near-continuous civil war between the Birkebeiner faction and the Baglers backed by the Norwegian church. Coin production was decentralized and irregular throughout these conflicts, which accounts for the crude workmanship and significant variation seen across surviving specimens of this type. Skaare's attribution places this issue within a narrow documentary window, but exact dating within the reign remains contested among Scandinavian numismatists.
