Norway's bracteate-style fractional issues from this period were struck under a monetary system so fragmented that regional ecclesiastical authorities and local chieftains often controlled minting alongside the crown. The reign span covering this piece corresponds to the turbulent period of the Bagler-Birkebeiner civil conflicts, when competing factions fighting over the Norwegian throne disrupted nearly every royal institution — minting among them.
Skaare 156 is among the thinner and lighter examples of Norwegian medieval silver, where die alignment and flan preparation were inconsistent enough that no two pieces strike identically.
