| Description de l’avers | Central field displays a schematic cross-headed symbol above a serpentine or spiral motif, the entire design enclosed within two concentric raised circular lines forming a double inner ring. The surrounding border consists of a continuous row of raised pellets or bosses arranged around the circumference, characteristic of late 12th-century Norwegian bracteate coinage. The flan is thin and irregularly shaped, as is typical of hammered bracteates of this period. No legend or inscription is present. The overall design is executed in a bold, deeply struck relief consistent with the primitive artistic style of medieval Norwegian minor coinage. |

Norway's bracteate-style fractional issues from this period were struck under a monetary system so fragmented that regional ecclesiastical authorities and local chieftains often controlled minting alongside the crown. The reign span covering this piece corresponds to the turbulent period of the Bagler-Birkebeiner civil conflicts, when competing factions fighting over the Norwegian throne disrupted nearly every royal institution — minting among them.
Skaare 156 is among the thinner and lighter examples of Norwegian medieval silver, where die alignment and flan preparation were inconsistent enough that no two pieces strike identically.
