The overall execution is characteristic of the hammered copper coinage produced at the Trichinopoly (Trichy) mint under Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah. The flan is irregular and the strike is off-centre in places. |

Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah held the Nawabship of the Carnatic for nearly half a century, but his authority was progressively hollowed out by the East India Company, which used him as a client ruler while accumulating his debts and his territory. The Trichy mint operated under this increasingly nominal sovereignty — coins struck here in the later decades of his reign were issued by a ruler who was, in practical terms, already a pensioner of the Company by the 1780s.
