Hildesheim's civic coinage of the early 1520s emerged from a period of acute municipal tension between the city and its prince-bishop, a conflict that would eventually erupt into the Hildesheim Diocesan Feud of 1519–1523. The city issued under its own authority precisely because that authority was under active contest. This quarter-Mariengulden belongs to the tail end of that feud, struck while the political settlement was still unresolved.
