Philip the Good's long consolidation of the Burgundian Netherlands created an administrative headache for minters: each territory retained its own coinage rights, so the same nominal denomination was struck under different local authorities simultaneously. The "Vierlander" designation reflects this — these quarter groten circulated across Holland, Zeeland, Brabant, and Flanders as a de facto interregional coin, a practical concession to merchant traffic rather than any formal monetary union.
At roughly 0.40g, these wore quickly and most survivors are weak on the flan edges. The long date range of over three decades means die varieties are numerous, and Vanhoudt's sequencing between the vdCh references remains a source of ongoing disagreement among Low Countries specialists.
