The castle motif is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding field bears the legend CIVITAS SIY (referring to the city of Chios) in uncial Latin characters, interrupted by decorative elements at the cardinal points. The overall composition references the civic arms of Chios under Genoese lordship.
