Boccanegra's first dogeship — he was deposed in 1344 and wouldn't return to power until 1356 — produced this fractional denomination at a moment when Genoese commercial reach stretched from the Black Sea to the North Atlantic. The quartarola exists because long-distance trade demanded small, reliable gold for settling fractional accounts that the full genovino couldn't address without change.
The .999 fineness held without deviation across Genoese gold coinage for over a century, a standard the city defended by statute.
