Obverse description Juvenile laureate effigy of Louis XIII facing right, draped and cuirassed, wearing a ruff collar (fraise). The king's bust is rendered in the early Baroque style characteristic of the reign's first decade. The encircling legend reads LVDOVIC. XIII. D. G. FRANC. ET. NAVAR. REX. followed by the mint letter, denoting his titles as King of France and Navarre by the Grace of God.

Reverse description A floriated cross with fleurs-de-lis at each arm terminus occupies the centre of the reverse, with a crowned capital L monogram at its heart, each quadrant of the cross adorned with a small globule. The date 1625 appears in the upper portion of the encircling legend, which reads SIT. NOMEN. DOMINI. BENEDICTVM., a pious invocation meaning 'Blessed be the Name of the Lord.' The overall design is crisp and well-centred, consistent with the high-quality milled coinage introduced under Nicolas Briot's supervision.
