Salt River Bay is the only known site where a documented land confrontation between Europeans and Native Americans in what is now U.S. territory took place — Columbus's second voyage anchored there in 1493, and the resulting skirmish with the Carib people left one Spaniard dead and one Carib killed by crossbow. The park's dual designation as both historical and ecological preserve reflects a congressional compromise, protecting a functioning mangrove estuary alongside the colonial-era landing site.
This is the fourth release in the America the Beautiful Quarters series for 2020, authorized under the legislation that ran the program from 2010 through 2021.
