Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of George Washington, based on Jean-Antoine Houdon's 1785 life mask, dominates the central field. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs across the upper periphery, while QUARTER DOLLAR curves along the lower border. The inscription LIBERTY appears to the left of the effigy and IN GOD WE TRUST is positioned to the right in three lines. The portrait features Washington's characteristic queue hairstyle and classical Roman-style drapery, rendered in high relief befitting the five-ounce bullion format.
