The Great Basin quarter belongs to the America the Beautiful series, which Congress authorized in 2010 as a bullion and collector extension of the 50 State Quarters program. Great Basin National Park in Nevada was established in 1986, one of the younger parks in the system, and its inclusion required congressional nomination like every other site in the series. These five-ounce strikes are produced at Philadelphia and carry a "P" mint mark — unusual for a bullion issue, since Philadelphia historically reserved that mark for collector coinage.
