| Obverse description | The obverse presents a left-facing effigy of George Washington, modeled after the classic Flanagan portrait design and engraved by William Cousins. The legend LIBERTY appears above the bust, while IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed to the left of the portrait in the field. The denomination QUARTER DOLLAR runs along the lower rim, and the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper periphery. The mint mark S, denoting the San Francisco Mint, appears below the ribbon of Washington's queue. |

| Additional information |
The Grand Canyon quarter was the second of five America the Beautiful releases for 2010, part of a 56-coin program authorized by Congress in 2008 to run through 2021. The series followed the same legislative logic as the 50 State Quarters program but drew on federal lands rather than state symbols — national parks, monuments, forests, and historic sites.
Silver Proof examples were struck exclusively at San Francisco. The .900 fine composition mirrors the 90% silver standard used for circulating quarters prior to 1965.
