The Gettysburg quarter was the third release in the America the Beautiful series, which Congress authorized in 2008 to replace the 50 State Quarters program. Gettysburg National Military Park itself was established in 1895, making it one of the oldest federally protected battlefield sites in the country — the federal government had been purchasing land there since 1895 specifically to preserve the terrain as it stood during the three-day July 1863 engagement.
The Philadelphia and Denver mints both struck circulation strikes this year, while West Point produced five-ounce silver bullion versions of the same design at the enlarged diameter of three inches.
