Obverse description The obverse features the left-facing portrait bust of George Washington, the first President of the United States (1789–1797), modeled after the classic Houdon portrait and engraved by William Cousins after John Flanagan's original design. The legend LIBERTY arcs above the effigy, while IN GOD WE TRUST appears in the left field. The mintmark S is positioned below the ribbon of Washington's queue. The denomination QUARTER DOLLAR is inscribed along the lower rim, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA completing the outer legend.
