Beschrijving voorzijde Full-length figure of Liberty standing facing right within a recessed niche flanked by two lower parapets, her head turned to gaze over her left shoulder, wearing a gown of classical drapery with her right breast protected by a coat of chainmail; she carries a large heraldic shield on her left arm and extends an olive branch in her outstretched right hand, symbolizing both preparedness and peace. Thirteen five-pointed stars are arranged in two groups along the left and right periphery of the field. The legend LIBERTY arcs across the upper border, with IN GOD WE TRVST inscribed below it, and the date appears in the lower exergual area, with the mint mark positioned to the left of the date on branch-mint issues.

Beschrijving keerzijde A boldly rendered American bald eagle soars in full flight to the right, its wings spread wide across the field in a dynamic, naturalistic composition designed by Hermon Atkins MacNeil. The motto E PLVRIBVS VNVM is inscribed in two lines in the upper central field, beneath the arcing legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA along the upper border. Seven five-pointed stars are arranged to the left of the eagle and six to the right, forming a broken arc around the mid-field, while three additional stars appear below the eagle in the lower field. The denomination QUARTER DOLLAR curves along the lower border.

Aanvullende informatie

The Type 2 Standing Liberty Quarter — distinguished by the stars relocated beneath the eagle — emerged mid-1917 after public outcry over the original Type 1 design's exposed figure. The modification was made quickly, within the same year the series launched. More practically, the recessed date on the obverse, introduced in 1925, addressed a persistent flaw: the date sat on the highest point of the relief and wore away almost completely on even lightly circulated examples, rendering vast numbers of pre-1925 pieces undatable without reference to other diagnostics.

Full head strikes are genuinely scarce across the entire run, a consequence of die alignment rather than collector mythology.
