Thirteen five-pointed stars are arranged in two groups along the left and right periphery of the field. The Type 2 Standing Liberty Quarter — distinguished by the stars relocated beneath the eagle — emerged mid-1917 after public outcry over the original Type 1 design's exposed figure. The modification was made quickly, within the same year the series launched. More practically, the recessed date on the obverse, introduced in 1925, addressed a persistent flaw: the date sat on the highest point of the relief and wore away almost completely on even lightly circulated examples, rendering vast numbers of pre-1925 pieces undatable without reference to other diagnostics.
Full head strikes are genuinely scarce across the entire run, a consequence of die alignment rather than collector mythology.
