Venezuela's fractional silver coinage of this period was produced almost entirely at foreign mints — principally Philadelphia and later Brussels — because the country lacked a functioning national mint for most of this span. The fifty-four year date range masks long gaps in production rather than continuous striking; several decades passed between some issues without any quarter bolívar being struck at all.

The .835 fineness aligns Venezuela with the Latin Monetary Union standard, which Caracas adopted by convention even without formal membership.
