Reverse description A left-facing portrait bust of Simón Bolívar, the Liberator, is centrally positioned in the field, rendered in high relief in the neoclassical style engraved by Désiré-Albert Barre. The legend 'BOLÍVAR LIBERTADOR' arcs around the upper periphery, with the engraver's name 'BARRE' inscribed at the base of the truncation. Privy marks of the issuing mint appear flanking the bust. The design is framed by a beaded border consistent with other denominations of the Venezuelan Bolívar series.

Additional information

Venezuela's fractional silver coinage of this period was produced almost entirely at foreign mints — principally Philadelphia and later Brussels — because the country lacked a functioning national mint for most of this span. The fifty-four year date range masks long gaps in production rather than continuous striking; several decades passed between some issues without any quarter bolívar being struck at all.

The .835 fineness aligns Venezuela with the Latin Monetary Union standard, which Caracas adopted by convention even without formal membership.
