Maria I and Pedro III ruled jointly following their marriage in 1760 — a union of aunt and nephew arranged to consolidate Braganza succession. Portuguese India's copper fractions from this co-regency period were struck at the Dio mint, one of the few remaining Portuguese enclaves still operating a functioning mint by the late eighteenth century. The Gomes MP 01 reference places this as the first catalogued type of the joint reign for the subcontinent issues, suggesting it was among the earliest authorised copper struck under their combined name in India.
