Obverse description The obverse features the heraldic arms of the East India Company at centre, comprising a quartered shield supported by two rampant lions, each grasping a flagstaff bearing a pennant. A crowned lion passant guardant forms the crest above the shield. Below the arms, a scrolling ribbon banner bears the abbreviated legend AUSP: REG: & SEN: ANG:, flanking the date 1833 which appears prominently at the centre base. The overall composition is rendered in high relief in the neoclassical style characteristic of early nineteenth-century British colonial coinage.
