The Qu'aiti Sultanate of Shihr and Mukalla — based in what is now Yemen — lacked its own minting infrastructure in the nineteenth century and solved the problem the way many small states did: by countermarking existing coinage already in circulation. This piece is a Zanzibar KM#1 quarter anna host, overstruck with a local mark to validate it for use in Qu'aiti territory. The host coin itself dates to 1882, the single year Zanzibar struck that type under Sultan Barghash bin Said.
Countermarked coins from Hadhramaut-region sultanates are notoriously difficult to attribute cleanly, and fakes of the CM itself are documented.
