Gwalior's copper fractionals from the late colonial period occupy an odd administrative space — the princely state retained the right to strike its own coinage under its treaty relationship with the British Crown, but by the 1920s the practical utility of these issues was increasingly undermined by the spread of Imperial coinage throughout central India. Jivaji Rao Scindia was only a child when this piece was struck, the regency effectively managing the state's affairs under British supervision.
KM#176 is known with minor die variations in the positioning of the Devanagari inscriptions.
