Muscat and Oman under Faisal bin Turki operated with considerable monetary informality — Indian rupees, Maria Theresa thalers, and a patchwork of imported coinage all circulated simultaneously. The decision to strike a local copper series in the 1890s was partly administrative and partly a gesture toward the formal trappings of sovereignty that the Al Bu Said sultans were increasingly expected to display before British India's political residents.
This was among the earliest machine-struck issues for the sultanate, produced in Bombay. The series saw limited uptake in actual commerce given the entrenched familiarity with Indian coin types.
